Where We Failed

Looking back at a relationship, he realizes that love was present, but neither person learned how to fight for the relationship together.

He lay in bed with his eyes open, staring at the ceiling. Sleep remained beyond reach, chased away by the relentless churn of his thoughts. One question circled his mind: What happened?

The memories returned in fragments—hazy, yet persistent. Were they real? Had the laughter, the tenderness, and everything they shared been false? He retraced their steps, searching for the moment when everything began to go wrong.

The feelings had not been false. The love had been there. The problem was deeper: they had both failed the relationship. They were a loving couple when life was gentle, but when conflict came, they fought as two separate people, each defending a private position. They could have faced the problem side by side, but they did not.

They took each other’s words at face value. One would say, “I want to leave,” and the other would answer, “Okay.” But sometimes pain speaks before the heart has decided. Perhaps they should have paused and said, “I know you are hurting. Feel what you need to feel, but do not face it alone. Let us understand this before we let each other go.”

That was where they had failed. They had not claimed ownership over the bond they shared. They had not found the courage to hold on with care when the other began to drift away.

With that realization circling his mind, he finally fell asleep.
